DDE has been shown to be toxic to rats at mg/kg. DDE and its parent, DDT, are reproductive toxicants for certain birds species, and major reasons for the decline of the bald eagle , brown pelican peregrine falcon , and osprey . These compounds cause egg shell thinning in susceptible species, which leads to the birds’ crushing their eggs instead of incubating them, due to the latter’s lack of resistance. Birds of prey , waterfowl , and song birds are more susceptible to eggshell thinning than chickens and related species , and DDE appears to be more potent than DDT.
Why a report on castor oil? Castor oil is one of the most versatile plant oils. Its unique chemical structure makes it useful in a wide number of industries and applications. Castor oil is fast becoming one of the most sought after plant oils, owing to its rich properties and variety of end-uses. Currently, it is being used by industries from pharmaceuticals to lubricants. With biopolymer and bio-fuels industries picking up a lot of steam in the last couple of years, the potential for castor oil to play a much larger role in the world economy had increased dramatically. While the castor oil industry is over five decades old, there has been considerable interest shown in this industry in the last few years. Leading countries from practically every continent (North & South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania) are showing renewed interest in the castor crop.
In 2010, the Natural Resources Defense Council forced the FDA to review triclosan after suing them for their inaction. Because the FDA prohibited hexachlorophene , a compound similar to triclosan, Halden and others argued that the FDA should also ban triclosan. On December 17, 2013, the FDA issued a draft rule revoking the Generally recognized as safe status of triclosan as an ingredient in hand wash products, citing the need for additional studies of its potential endrocrine and developmental effects; impact on bacterial resistance; and carcinogenic potential.
